FuGaKyu, which means House of Exquisite Elegance, has been a Japanese cuisine destination since it opened its doors over 15 years ago. Walk through the doors of its flagship restaurant on Beacon Street in Coolidge Corner in Brookline and you can see why. Bubbling koi pond, stone sculptures and bamboo transports you to a different world. Add booths with sliding doors, private tatami rooms, and solid sushi and FuGaKyu offers a truly unique, family-friendly dining experience.fugakyu private

family-friendly restaurant tip

Reserve or request a private booth with sliding door. Kids love the privacy (as do some of the other diners looking for a quiet dining experience)

Outstanding. Families are greeted with smiles and kid’s menus are offered to young diners. Staff is happy to help you stow your strollers. You’ll find loads of families happily dining throughout the massive multi-level dining room.

family-friendly restaurant tip Looking to occupy kids while you wait for your table? Check out the koi pond, live fish tanks or the sushi bar with the wooden boats pulled on a conveyer belt.

family-friendly restaurant tip

Make sure you request training chopsticks for kids (or for you) and watch your little ones try to master using chopsticks.

Main Menu:IMG_5344
FuGaKyu has one of the most extensive Japanese menus around. There’s sushi and maki of course. But also check out savory appetizers, lunch specials, tempura, rice and noodles dishes, and entrees.

Favorites include:

  • Tempura
  • FuGaKyu boat
  • Miso Yaki entrée

family-friendly restaurant tip Try the lunch bento specials – huge portions at an unbeatable price ($11)

Kid’s Menu:
FuGaKyu offers a kid’s menu for kids 10 and under. For $11, kids get a choice of one appetizer, one entrée, one side, a dessert and a beverage. Menu options include traditional Japanese fare plus some dishes with a kiddie twist (Mac & Cheese Maki anyone?).

family-friendly restaurant tipIMG_5338 We suggest skipping the cute fusion rolls and expose your kids to the traditional items so they can start appreciating Japanese cuisine.
