When you think Food Court, you picture subpar fast food sitting under heat lamps from national chain restaurants. But walk into the often-packed Food Court at H Mart, the “Korean Whole Foods” supermarket in Burlington, and you’ll look at dining out with kids in a Food Court in a whole new light. The small Food Court offers shoppers a great selection of Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean food stalls that will surely satisfy cravings for authentic Asian street food. But before you go, here are some tips:

family-friendly restaurant tip Like most food courts, it’s self-service. You are given a pager after placing your order at a food stall and you seat yourself at any open tables. We recommend a “divide and conquer” approach if going with another adult – one adult places the order while the other scout a table with the kids.

family-friendly restaurant tip H Mart has become an Asian grocery destination, so the grocery store and food court can get packed. Arrive early to snag a table. Otherwise, plan on pouncing on a table as soon as diners are done.

family-friendly restaurant tip You will be tempted to explore and shop the extensive store filled with every imaginable Asian produce, condiments, meats and seafood. We recommend eating first to avoid having to figure out where to put your groceries (or shopping cart) as the small dining area in the Food Court can get crowded.

Good. H Mart and the Food Court are teeming with families, especially on the weekends. There are some high chairs available. Since everything is self-service, there is very little staff to help navigate the food stalls or help with seating.

family-friendly restaurant tip Depending on the food stall and your order, there is often a wait for your food to be prepared. Come prepared with activities to keep kids occupied.

family-friendly restaurant tip Anticipating a long wait? Check out the Hello Kitty boutique at the front of the store. Kids will love exploring the narrow aisles packed with toys and accessories.

There are several food stalls serving up traditional Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine. Many have back-lit menu boards with photographs and numbers to help with ordering. We recommend Woojeon Korean food stand for traditional Korean Cuisine or the Japanese food stand for sushi or ramen. Tous Les Jours French-Asian bakery is a must-have. Favorites include:

  • King dumplings
  • Hot Stone Bowl Bibimbap
  • Bulgogi Plate
  • Butter Bread from Tous Les Jours

Kid’s Menu:

There is no kid’s menu at the Food Court. But with so many options to choose from, there are plenty of kid-friendly items for even the pickiest eaters. Noodles and rice dishes are always a kid-favorite. Mandoo (Korean dumplings), Scallion pancakes or croquettes from the bakery are popular kid items.
