Tiny Tavern Entrance

Overview:

Tucked just off of the main hustle and bustle of Portsmouth, NH (and around the corner from the blue awning-covered entrance of the Dolphin Striker Restaurant), you’ll find the tiny entrance to the Spring Hill Tavern. The casual, cozy sister of the more formal Dolphin Striker, The Spring Hill Tavern offers comfort food in an historic setting. Step inside and you’ll feel like you’ve been taken back in time–when the streets were filled with peddlers, and ships were sailing in and out of the port. Nestled amid the original stone and log walk that first housed the tavern over 200 years ago are small tables and a few comfortable booths around the old bar.

Head up the 200+ year old (very steep) staircase and you’ll find The Dolphin Striker’s main dining room.  For a kid-friendly Portsmouth restaurant experience, we find the Tavern to be more enjoyable and just as tasty. The Tavern has its own menu of lighter fares, or you can order from the Dolphin Striker’s more refined menu.

family-friendly restaurant tip There’s live music every night starting at 7pm on Sundays and at 9PM Tuesday through Saturday.

KidTude:

Excellent. The staff offers a wonderful welcome to children of all ages at this kid-friendly Portsmouth, NH restaurant. The Tavern is very cozy (read: tight and small), but big on history. Older kids will enjoy checking out the many historic tales and photos on the rustic walls made of rock, brick and aged lumber.

family-friendly restaurant tip Ask for a seat by the well, where you and the kids can watch the fish swim by!

The Tavern menu offers typical pub fare items, prepared with quality ingredients. The fish is fresh and the burgers are perfection. Feeling fancy? You can also order off of The Dolphin Striker’s main dining menu.  No matter which menu you choose at this kid-friendly Portsmouth, NH restaurant, you’ll find yourself saying “Next time I’ll have to try…”.

You may have a hard time choosing from the many traditional favorites, including Seafood Paella, Braciole and Beef Wellington. Fresh fish, prepared to your liking (Mediterranean style, grilled, pad Thai, broiled or blackened) is also a popular choice. Favorites include:

  • Lobster Mac and Cheese
  • Lobster St. Tropez
  • Surf and Turf

Kids Menu:

The Dolphin Striker and The Spring Hill Tavern don’t have a formal kid’s menu, but the lighter fares menu proves to be popular for all ages. Don’t see something that fits the bill? The staff is happy to accommodate most requests to keep the kiddos well fed. Bonus—the kid’s portion size AND price tag will be smaller than the standard entrée. Popular requests from the little ones include:

  • Chicken tenders
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Hamburger with fries

Nearby Attractions:

  • Strawberry Bank
  • USS Albacore & Museum

family-friendly restaurant tip There is no changing table in either bathroom, but the counters by the sink offer just enough space for a quick change.

family-friendly restaurant tip We recommend leaving strollers in the car or outside on the sidewalk.
