When a restaurant consistently comes up as the top kid-friendly restaurant on other review sites and winner of Best of Boston Kid-Friendly restaurant, Team KidNosh just had to see for ourselves.

kid friendly restaurant summer shack cambridgeFrom famed chef Jasper White, the Summer Shack empire (locations in Cambridge, Boston, Dedham, and Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun) is a kitschy homage to dining-in-the-rough New England seafood “shack”. The Cambridge flagship location seats 350 diners, featuring 1200-gallon lobster tanks and huge steam kettles in the center of the five seating areas.  There is an endless summer vibe, with communal picnic tables and colorful booths. As one might expect, the Summer Shack serves up mostly New England seafood fare. Their motto: Food is Love.

Fantastic. Young diners are given crayons to decorate the craft paper covering each table. With a reputation as a top kid friendly restaurant, there are families abound.

Main Menu:

The menu is extensive, ranging from a selection of east coast oysters at the raw bar ($2.50 ea.), 1lb. steamers ($14), clam chowder ($5 cup), corn dog ($6), and fried Ipswich whole belly clam plate ($24).

In addition to the traditional New England seafood fare, Summer Shack shakes things up with items such as lobster potstickers ($11.50) and pan roasted artic char with caramelized onion apple relish and braised red cabbage ($23). And of course there’s lobster, prepared six different ways: steamed, pan roasted, wood grilled, baked stuffed, wok seared and clam bake (prices are market).

  • Lobsters
  • Beer battered fish & chips
  • Blackboard fish specials

Kid’s Menu:

Summer Shack kid’s $10 prix fixe menu (for kids 10 and under) includes your typical kid fare, but elevated just a bit – Shells and Cheese (made from scratch), Corn Meal Fried Fish Fingers, and Corn Dogs (made from Pearl hot dogs). More adventurous eaters can choose from Grilled Florida Gulf Shrimp or Heirloom Tomatoes with Basil, Olive Oil and Sea Salt. All kid’s meals come with a drink and dessert. Portions are pretty large too.summershackballoons
