Years ago the Hingham Shipyard was known only as the departure port for the commuter boat to Boston, but recent years have seen it evolve into a retail and gastro destination. Wahlburgers, brainchild of chef Paul Wahlberg (yep those Wahlbergs) is a tasty option for fresh, affordable food amidst the higher priced and more formal Shipyard options. Add it to your repertoire of kids restaurants on the South Shore and you won’t be disappointed.
Wahlburgers is split into two sections – bar/table service for those that want to be waited on and counter service for quick, self-service convenience. Table service includes low tables and group-sized high boys as well as a large outdoor patio, complete with heaters and an outdoor fireplace for chillier nights. The bar can be packed with customers watching events on the big screens, but table service doesn’t suffer thanks to an attentive staff. Counter service is a great option if you’re pressed for time – just order at the counter and wait at your booth with a buzzer until your food is ready. Short on time and/or patience and need dinner on the go? Wahlburgers even offers the option for curbside pick up from 5-9pm – just call in your order and they will deliver to your rowdy crew in the car.
Awesome. Packed with ample high chairs and booster chairs, Wahlburgers doesn’t shy away from catering to the junior set and is a great option for kids restaurants on the South Shore. If you order from the counter, employees will often help carry trays to your table as well as clear up when you’re finished.
The menu is chock full of burger options, as well as salads and sandwiches. From the very basic ‘Our Burger’ to the spicy salmon burger, there is an option for everyone. Favorites include:
- Jenn’s Chicken Sandwich
- Crispy Haddock Sandwich
- Double Decker
- Onion Rings (more like onion straws – the Bermuda onion makes these sweet and delish)
- Sweet Potato Tots
The kid’s menu is small but the taste is not. You’ll find the ‘Smahlburger’ a good option for kids, as well as favorites like grilled cheese, chicken fingers and hot dogs. You can load the “dirty water style” hot dog with a variety of adventurous toppings like shredded cheddar cheese, sauerkraut, ketchup sriracha sauce or fresh jalapenos.
Milk options (chocolate or regular whole milk) are sourced from Norwell-based Hornstra Farms. Hornstra’s vat pasteurization method makes for a rich taste not found in milk from the grocery store. The local dairy focus doesn’t stop there – go ahead and indulge in a milkshake made with Hingham based Nona’s homemade ice cream.
